Berry season is officially underway in Skagit County, and that means it’s time to get your strawberries. One of our favorite varieties to grow and share with customers is the Montana strawberry, a reliable, flavorful option that’s well-suited for Pacific Northwest gardens!
What Makes Montana Strawberries Special?
Montana strawberries are known for their sweet, classic flavor and compact size, making them ideal for backyard beds, raised planters, and even large containers. They produce firm, juicy berries that are great for fresh eating, baking, or freezing.
This variety performs especially well in our local climate. Cool spring temperatures and mild summers support healthy growth and generous yields. With the right care, Montana strawberries will return year after year and continue to produce reliably.
How to Grow Them
Montana strawberries are June-bearing, which means they deliver one strong crop in early summer. They grow best in full sun and well-draining soil, with about 12 to 18 inches of space between plants. Like all strawberries, they benefit from nutrient-rich soil and regular watering, especially when fruit is forming.
A few tips for success:
- Choose a sunny spot with good airflow
- Water consistently, keeping leaves dry when possible
- Use mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds
- Harvest berries when they’re fully red for the best flavor
A Perfect Time to Plant
Early summer is an ideal time to plant strawberries. Montana strawberries are already acclimated to our region and ready to settle in. The sooner they’re planted, the better they’ll root, setting you up for a rewarding harvest this season and a strong return next year.
